Who can calm the storm?

Mark 4:38-40  (ESV)

But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

Who can calm the storm?

Have you ever wished for the superpower of being able to control nature? Imagine being able to tell the wind where to go or being able to control the waves of the sea. Did you know there actually was someone who had the power to do this?

One day Jesus got into a boat with His disciples. He fell asleep while they rowed across the Sea of Galilee. A great storm came over the sea and the disciples were afraid their boat was going to sink. They went and woke Jesus. Jesus stood up and said to the wind and the waves, “Peace, be still!” And the wind and the waves stopped!

Jesus asked the disciples, “Where is your faith?” They had seen all His miracles, yet they still didn’t trust that He was able to keep them safe in the middle of a storm.

Maybe you are going through a storm in your life right now. Maybe the rain is pouring down on you and everything seems against you, like waves trying to sink your boat. Will you trust in Jesus, the One who is able to calm the storm?

Who can raise the dead?

Have you ever wondered what happens after people die? Maybe you are afraid of death because you don’t know. It seems terrible to think that once a person has died, we will never see them again. Or is it possible that the dead can come back to life?

Many prophets performed all kinds of miracles, but Jesus showed His great power by raising people from the dead. There are a few occasions in The Book that tell us how Jesus called dead people back to life.

In the gospel of John, there was a man named Lazarus who was a friend of Jesus. He became sick and died. By the time Jesus got there, he had been dead for four days. Jesus told them to take the stone away from Lazarus’ tomb. The people didn’t want to because they were afraid of the smell – after all Lazarus had been in there for four days! But Jesus promised them that if they believed they would see the glory of God.

When they rolled the stone away from the tomb, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” And, sure enough, Lazarus came out!

Jesus promised that if you believe in Him, you don’t have to fear death. He promised to raise all his followers to life on the last day when he will return to judge the world. Then we will live with Him forever. Would you like that?

She was scared and shy to tell her story

She was scared and shy to tell her story

How could I ever forget the young woman. She was scared and shy to tell her story, but knew that she could help others by telling it.

Her father chased her away from home because she was pregnant. Her mother sold a cow to give her money to follow her boyfriend to the neighbouring country.

When she got to the address of her boyfriend, there was another girl with him. She was shocked and found shelter with an uncle. He took her in for only a few days because her baby was to be born. After the birth of her baby boy she didn’t know where to go or what to do. It was then that she decided to throw her baby away. She hoped somebody would pick up the baby and look after him. She took us to the place where she had left her baby. She wanted to end her life…

“Inside of me it’s dark, I want light!”

“Inside of me it’s dark, I want light!”

I looked at the young woman next to me in the bus. She was full of enthusiasm. But her eyes were sad. She had already told me she had just finished her medical studies, she was now a doctor. She pushed the beautiful curly hair from her forehead.

She was curious. “Where did you learn to speak my language?”

I smiled. “You know, I’m only trying. I learn from people like you and I have a Book in your language and in my own. I read it in both languages, it helps me to understand more.”

“Book?” she wanted to know. I took my Bible in my own language from my handbag.  She took it from me and opened it. “And the one in my language?” she wanted to know. I took the Incil from my bag.

“I’d love to read this!” she said, opening it and started reading.

“I tell you what,” I commented, “you can take this one, I can get myself another one.”

“Inside of me it’s dark, I want light!” she looked me full in the face.

I took the Incil from her and paged to John 1 verse 9.

She read: “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.”

“This sounds wonderful. I want to know more. But, you know, I was so busy with my medical studies, I did not read our own holy book.  I now want to read it.”

“Yes”, I agreed, “do that. I suggest that you ask the true God, the One that made you, to show you the True Light.  “I suggest that you read your book and also the Incil. God who created you will reveal to you the truth.

Jesus Himself said in John 8 verse 12, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ ” (John 8:12)

She looked relieved. “I’m definitely going to read both books and ask God to reveal Himself to me!”
