Who can give me living water?

John 7:37-39 (ESV)
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this He said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Who can give me living water?

Who can give me living water?

One day Jesus was sitting next to a well and a Samaritan woman came to get water. He asked her for a drink because it was very hot. She was surprised that He spoke to her, because Jews didn’t speak to Samaritans, but Jesus told her that in fact she should be the one to speak to Him. He said that she should ask Him for water. This surprised her because He didn’t have anything to draw water from the well with. But Jesus explained that the water He promised to give her wasn’t literal water. When we drink physical water, we get thirsty again, but Jesus said that if we drink the living water that He gives, we will never be thirsty again! This living water becomes a well within us, giving us eternal life.

Jesus was a prophet and He knew what was happening in the woman’s life. He asked her to bring her husband, and when she said that she had no husband, He replied, “You are right, for you have had five husbands and the one you now have is not your husband.” He knew that the woman was broken inside from being rejected by five husbands; she was empty and was thirsty for true love, not like the love of men, which often fails and rejects us. This is why Jesus promised to give her living water.

Are you broken and empty inside? Are you thirsty for true love and true life? Are you thirsty for living water?

Who can make a paralyzed man walk and who can forgive sins?

One day Jesus was teaching in a house. There were so many people listening to Him, that some people who were bringing a paralyzed man on a bed couldn’t get through to Him. These people were so desperate to bring their friend to Jesus that they went up on the house’s roof and let him down through the tiles of the roof into the middle of all the people where Jesus was standing.

The people brought their friend to Jesus so that He could heal him, but the first thing Jesus did when He saw their faith in Him was to say to the paralyzed man, “Your sins are forgiven you.” The people around Jesus were upset because only God could forgive people’s sins, but Jesus claimed to have the authority to forgive sins. Jesus knew what the people were thinking, and so to prove His claim He said to the paralyzed man, “Stand up and walk.” And the paralyzed man did exactly that – he was healed and he stood up and walked!

Jesus showed His power by healing a paralyzed man. He also claimed to be able to forgive people’s sins. Do you believe He can heal you? Do you believe He can forgive your sins?

Who can make a paralyzed man walk and who can forgive sins?

Mark 2:1-12 (ESV)

And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

Will God forgive me?

Romans 4:5-8

And to the one who does not work but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
    and whose sins are covered;
blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”

Micah 7:18-20

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity
    and passing over transgression
    for the remnant of his inheritance?
He does not retain his anger forever,
    because he delights in steadfast love.
He will again have compassion on us;
    he will tread our iniquities underfoot.
You will cast all our sins
    into the depths of the sea.
You will show faithfulness to Jacob
    and steadfast love to Abraham,
as you have sworn to our fathers
    from the days of old.

Will God forgive me?

Have you ever needed forgiveness? Perhaps from a friend or relative. But have you ever needed forgiveness from God? Now that is scary. Will God forgive us?

In The Book, God tells us He is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He longs for each of us to come to Him so that He can forgive us. Don’t get me wrong – God is holy and He doesn’t leave sin unpunished, but He is calling everyone to turn to Him and receive His forgiveness.

We all need God’s forgiveness. Not one human being is good enough to please God. We can clearly see that no matter how hard we try on our own, we can’t stop making mistakes and doing wrong things. Whenever we try to do good things, we are trying to get close to God. But that will never work. We need to come to God and admit to Him that we aren’t good enough. When we admit our mistakes, we can receive His forgiveness and have a close relationship with Him.

When God forgives, He forgives totally. He doesn’t hold grudges; He washes our mistakes away and never looks at them again. God paid a high price for our forgiveness. Jesus had to die to wash away our sins. God loved the world so much that He was willing to pay this high price to give us the gift of forgiveness. Will you receive His forgiveness?
